Importance of the Center Washer - There should be a 13/8 inch washer countersunk into the top of a quoit board to minimize the chance that a hub will pop through the slate.
If the hub is knocked through the slate there is nothing you can do to fix the quoit board.

The 13/8 inch washer widens the hub pressure point and distributes the force.
The washer must be countersunk so the quoits won't catch on them.

Stability & Tightness of Supports -
One minor detail can make the biggest difference.

Without the proper angle cut on the supports:
The quoit boards will slide more.
The screws will frequently become loose.
Over time the screw holes will become stripped.
You will have to remember to bring a screwdriver with you every time you want to play.

Ribbon Quoit Boards vs. Clear Quoit Boards -
There are two types of slate quoit boards: "ribbon boards" (a.k.a. "standard boards") and "clear boards" (a.k.a. "no-ribbon boards").
You will notice grayish lines running through the board in the left picture below. That line is called a ribbon.

Because approximately 95% of mined slate has a ribbon it costs a little more to get clear slate.
The ribbon is a natural property of slate and does not weaken the board, however some people find it distracting, so they prefer the clear. It is simply a personal preference of quality vs. price.
Our ribbon boards are sanded with a certain grit to provide the right texture and to lighten the ribbon color.
If you are not sure which style you want we can give you an idea of what other people decided:
- Most, if not all, quoit league teams use clear boards.
- Our sales for the last five years have consisted of 65% ribbon boards and 35% clear boards.
