| Why are Quoits Are Better Than Horseshoes? | |
- You don't need as much room in your backyard. The boards are only 18 feet apart (hub-to-hub). Horseshoes stakes are 40 feet apart.
- You don't get dirty like you do when playing horseshoes.
- You can play indoors or outdoors.
- They quoits don't hurt when they hit you because they are made of rubber, not metal.
- It doesn't dig up your yard like horseshoes.
- People who have a hard time pitching the heavy horseshoes will find it easy to pitch quoits. Quoits are 1 pound each and pitched 18 feet. Horseshoes are 2½ pounds each and pitched 40 feet.
- You always have a consistent target so you can really refine your skills and become precise. In horseshoes the target is always different because the ground gets dug up.
- Quoits are much safer around children and animals.
- At picnics and parties you can run several games or tournaments at one time by setting up other sets of quoit boards in close proximity to each other. It is too dangerous to do that with horseshoes.
| How are Quoit Boards Made? | |
- The slate is pulled from the ground in big slabs
- The slabs are cut into 2 foot by 4 foot sections
- The 2 foot by 4 foot sections are split at a 1 1/2 to 2 inch thickness
- The split sections are run through a grinding machine that grinds the pieces to about 1 1/4 inch thick
- The ground pieces are cut into 2 foot squares
- The 2-foot squares are put on a sanding bed to give the boards the 1 inch thickness and proper texture. The proper texture is very important. If it is too coarse the quoits edges will wear down too fast. If it is too smooth the quoits will slide off of the board too easily.
- The holes are drilled and countersunk, and the lines (rings) are scribed into the slate. The rings are used to determine which quoit is closer to the hub.
- The base and hub is mounted to the boards and they are ready to be used.
| Where can you play quoits? | |
Indoors, outdoors, road trips, camping, beach... You can play quoits pretty much anywhere as long as you have about 24 feet by 6-foot space. People play in their yard at parties and picnics or anytime just to have fun. The quoit league teams play indoors in bars, clubs, veteran legions, and firehouses. Tournaments are often held at the same places and are usually open to the general public. We, at Quoits Direct, create a web page for bars, clubs, and establishments if they have quoit boards. The web page is free advertising for them and lets the general public know where they can go to play. The web pages for each establishment can be accessed and viewed from our Quoit Leagues page. If you are aware of any quoiting establishments that are not on our website email us and we will add a free page for them.
Although quoit boards are 66 pounds each many people regularly take them with them when they go to the beach or camping. As an alternative we also sell beach quoits that consist of two red tipped wooden stakes and four red quoits. They are colored red so you can easily see them in case the waves wash up onto the beach where you are playing.

| How Should I Care For/Treat/Store Quoit Boards and Quoits? | |
As long as you take care of your quoit boards they should last your lifetime. If you play quoits a lot you will have to purchase new quoits over time as they get worn. Unless you play every day your quoits should last you three to ten years depending on how you treat them and how often you play.
Proper Care of Quoits: When you are not using your quoits keep them indoors and in the box. Just like any rubber it can become dry and brittle if they are exposed to the elements for long periods of time.
Proper Care of Quoit Boards: DO NOT oil or treat your quoit boards with cleaners, coatings, or solvents. You do not want to change the texture of the quoit board. If you want to clean them simply use soap and water or just water. You can scrub them with a soft brush. The texture on your quoit boards is manufactured just right to prevent the edges of your quoits from wearing down too fast and to prevent the quoits from sliding off the board too easily.
Leaving Your Boards Outside: Although slate is a stone and stones are solid they do contain water. Over extended periods of time direct sunlight can cause the water in the slate to dissipate and the quoit boards can warp. Although most people leave their quoit boards outside most of the year we have not seen this happen yet. If you do plan to leave your boards outside most of the year we recommend you at least shade the boards with something when not in use to keep them out of direct sunlight.
Common Causes of Broken Quoit Boards: Dropping them off of a pickup truck, running over them with your car or lawn tractor, leaning them against the wall when you store them (they can fall on the hubs and the hubs can pop through the board).
Fixing Chips in the Slate: If you set one quoit board upright on another quoit board, concrete, or other hard surface you can chip off a piece of slate. If the chip is shallow (up to 1/8th of an inch) you can usually sand it out using 60 grit sandpaper first and then 120 grit sandpaper. When using the 60 grit start by sanding the edge of the deepest part of the chip first. Do this until the edge of the chip is even with the low part of the chip and then make your sanding area a couple of inches bigger to disperse the uneven area over a larger area. When the chipped area is evened out enough then use the 120 grit sandpaper and sand in a swirling motion two inches bigger in diameter as before to get the texture close to what it was before. If the chip is bigger than 1/8th inch deep glue the chip back into place.
| What is the black line in slate? | |
Just like wood has a grain, slate has what is called a "ribbon". A ribbon is a dark line in the slate and normally varies in width from 1/2 inch to 6 inches. It is a natural property of slate and does not weaken the slate. Some people are distracted by the ribbon while most others are not. Quoits boards can be purchased without the ribbon. These ribbonless boards are called "clear boards". Clear boards cost more. Most people are not bothered by the ribbon so 65% of the quoits boards we sell are ribbon boards.
Visit our quality page for further details and pictures of clear quoit boards.
| What is Better, Aluminum Hubs or Brass Hubs? | |
We sell both aluminum and brass hubs. Most people want the aluminum hubs. We recommend the aluminum for a couple of reasons. One reason is that brass can tarnish and aluminum will not. The other reason is that aluminum is easier to see when it starts getting dark outside. The reason we sell brass hubs is because that is all they used years ago. A lot of the old-timers are used to the brass hubs so we sometimes get requests for the brass. The cost and performance of the quoits on the hubs are the same so you decide which you prefer.
